DeviceWatcher for IM Installation Instructions

DeviceWatcher Home | Installation | User Manual | License | Donate | Support

Make sure that you have properly installed and licensed InterMapper Version 3.6

This document assumes that you downloaded and expanded the DeviceWatcher for IM package successfully. You will therefore have a folder with two folders in it: "probe" and "server".

DWscreen1:

Installing the InterMapper Probe file

The probe file is called "com.gebe.tcp.DeviceWatcher" and is located inside the "probe" folder.

If you are running Mac OS 9, copy the file to the "InterMapper Probes" folder inside the InterMapper application folder.

For Mac OS X, the InterMapper Probes are located at /Library/Application Support/InterMapper Settings/Probes Copy the probe file to this location.

Either restart InterMapper or use the "Reload Probes" command from the Probe Type popup menu on the "Add Device(s)" dialog.

InterMapper is now ready for action.

Installing the DeviceWatcher Daemon on Mac OS X/Mac OS X Server/SuSE Linux

  1. Copy the contents of the folder "server" to the machine that you want to monitor.
  2. Log in to the machine as root.
  3. cd to the "server" directory.
  4. Run ./InstallDeviceWatcher. This will install the daemon to /opt/devicewatcher and add the necessary start up scripts on either platform.

Caution The script has been tested on Mac OS X and SuSE Linux 7.2. The Daemon runs as user "www" on Mac OS X and "wwwrun"on Linux. Presumably, these are only present when Apache is installed and need to be created by hand when not present.

Starting/Stopping the daemon

After a reboot, the Daemon is automatically launched by the installed startup script. Should you need to start or stop the Daemon any other time, follow these instructions:

Mac OS X:
Use /Library/StartupItems/DeviceWatcher/DeviceWatcher {start|stop|restart|status} [port] to start/stop the daemon. The optional parameter port lets you start the daemon on a specific port. Default is 10001.

Linux:
Use /etc/init.d/DeviceWatcher {start|stop|restart|status} [port] instead. See Mac OS X instructions above for additional parameters.
